About Fog and Feast

I’m Matt—a home cook, educator, and former food business owner. I founded a small-batch condiment company and grew it with retailers across Canada, never compromising on quality. My love for fresh, from-scratch cooking has always been at the heart of what I do—sometimes healthy, sometimes indulgent, but always made with care.

Born and raised in Halifax, I spent over a decade in the UK before returning home. Now, I’m raising two kids with my husband and gradually training them in the kitchen (with mixed success).

Fog and Feast is a celebration of the food and culture of the East Coast—stretching from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Eastern Quebec down through Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. These regions share more than just geography; they share deep culinary traditions, a love of hospitality, and a connection to the land and sea.

Through recipes, stories, and travel, this blog highlights the flavors that define our coast. At Fog and Feast, every meal is an opportunity to connect—with the land, the community, and the culture that makes this place special.

This blog has had many names over the years—RoughEats, TheBluenosers, TotalFeasts—but Fog and Feast captures what matters most. The fog represents the East Coast itself, and the feast is what happens when East Coasters come together—with food, drink, and music at the heart of it all.

Welcome to Fog and Feast. Let’s make something tasty.

Fog and Feast values

  • Good Food Takes Time
We believe that the best meals aren’t rushed. We honor the time and care that goes into preparing a meal from scratch, using fresh, whole ingredients. Each dish we create is designed to help you slow down, savor the process, and enjoy the simple pleasure of cooking at home.
  • Celebrating Local Traditions
Eastern Canada and New England are rich with culinary heritage, from the bounty of the sea to the farm-fresh produce that defines our region. At Fog and Feast, we embrace these traditions, crafting recipes that celebrate the food, culture, and people of the East Coast. Our goal is to share this passion for local food with every meal we create.
  • Supporting Local Food Companies
As an emerging food company ourselves, we’re committed to supporting other small businesses in Atlantic Canada and on the East Coast. We proudly feature and collaborate with local producers who share our values of quality, sustainability, and community. When you cook with us, you’re also supporting the local economy and farmers across the region.
  • Proudly East Coast
Our roots run deep in Atlantic Canada and the North Eastern USA. From the rugged coastline to the rich farmlands, we are constantly inspired by the unique stories, events, and, of course, the food that make this region so special. We’re passionate about shining a light on the businesses, people, and experiences that make our home truly one-of-a-kind.
  • Wabanaki
We are proudly located in Wabanaki, the area of land that consists of Eastern Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New England. Our recipes are inspired by this historic region. See our Land Acknowledgment here.

Join Us in Celebrating the East Coast

Let’s get cooking—East Coast style!

How this site has changed over the years!

  • 2013 I started writing down food I was cooking.
  • 2014 I started to actually think about the pictures of the food I was taking. Luckily they have been improving.
  • 2015 I nearly gave the blog for a new, rather stressful, job.
  • 2017 We decided to take all our carefully laid financial planning and throw it out the window. We adopted our two kids. The house hasn’t recovered yet, and I have much more grey hair.
  • 2018 Gave up the stressful job so I could actually do the school run. Decided, as I now had the time, I might as well try my hand at photography/cooking/menu planning again.
  • 2019 Started Total Feasts to put this photography, cooking and menu planning to good use!
  • 2020 Moved the family back to Canada and started Harvest and Wild.
  • 2021 Harvest and Wild took off, our sweet and savoury spreads gained retailers across Canada
  • 2022 Brought Total Feasts into the Harvest and Wild family, and joined as part of our Community Table.
  • 2024 Family health meant we had to choose between our stable careers or continuing to grow Harvest and Wild. Stable careers won, and started to wind down Harvest and Wild.
  • 2025 Realized I still had this blog, and wanted to do something with it. After much thought, decided to really focus on recipes, travel and stories from the East Coast of Canada and the USA. Fog and Feast was reborn.

Welcome!

I’m a husband, dad, bluenosers and an avid cook and picture taker. I think food is meant to be shared, and good food brings people together.
