As a kid, there was one treat my parents could always roll out like a carrot on a stick to get me and my sister to behave: brunch. They’d take us to a local hotel for their brunch buffet.

I used to love walking in. Taking in the mountains of pastries, the smell of the trays of bacon, eggs and hash browns, the omelette station, the cheese table, and who could pass up the dessert table. Yes, I’m amazing I didn’t weight more as a child.

We went back to one hotel a few years ago for a New Years Day brunch, and I was amazed at how it had changed. Sure the classics were there, but now there was a sushi station, a tapas bar and an Eggs Benedict bar. I mean come on, how can you choose. The kid in me wished I had a bottomless stomach.

So, this is where this awesome summer brunch is inspired from. We have Eggs Benedict three ways (including with fried chicken!), some scrummy summer roast potatoes with lemon and a beautifully vibrant blueberry feta salad with a balsamic dressing. Making it a true summer brunch is my take on the classic screwdriver, combining orange, lemon and lime juice with vodka.

The quality of your food is really important, and where possible you always want the food to be of higher welfare. Preferably organic and free-range. I love visiting farmers markets, but not everyone has these around. So here are some easy suggestions to get you eating more healthily:

If you’re in the USA Butcher Box is a great source of Free-Range Organic Chicken. If you click the link and use the code AP10 to save $10 off your first order!

In the UK, Riverford is a great source for both organic fruit and veg as well as higher welfare meats.

much love

  1. An Eggs Benedict bar!? Wow, now that’s a brunch I need to go find. I love brunch as well, Matt. However, with that said, we still rarely ever go out to eat for brunch (or breakfast for that matter). I love the idea of hosting a brunch, and the Eggs Benedict bar is inspiring! (Also, thanks for the hash brown casserole shout out here…you rock!) 🙂

    1. I must say, we used to go out for breakfast or brunch much more before we had little ones. It was a nice treat! Now I don’t think my boys would wait until 10 from brunch!

  2. OMG MATT I LOVE BRUNCH!! I want to eat everything you’ve posted, only I want someone to make it all for me! Ha! Thanks so much for including my bread pudding recipe, and as a total aside – you grew up in Nova Scotia?! I need to know more! 🙂

    1. I hail from the Darkside! Ok, technically my folks live in Cole Harbour, but my spare time was always spent in Dartmouth (mostly Banook and Sportsplex) so I count that as where I’m from. Moved over to the UK about 10 years ago, but we are actually looking at moving back soon!

  3. Brunch is absolutely my favourite meal! Love hosting it and making all the different dishes. And I especially love eating all the dishes! You have some lovely brunch items included in this menu! Pinning to my brunch board! And thanks for the shout out on my asparagus tart. Appreciate it!
